Philip Jennings is General Secretary of UNI Global Union, the global trade union for the services sector, representing 20 million workers in 150 countries. His mission is to Break through for workers, including all those working in the sports industry, to allow them to unionise and collectively bargain with the conviction that their rights are an essential part of human rights. He is also a strong advocate of equal rights and introduced a 40% rule for gender equality for all decision-making bodies within UNI Global Union. Driven by his strong sense of purpose and ability to inspire others, the organisation which Philip founded in 2000, UNI Global Union, has spearheaded a coordinated union organising push in all continents, with over 150 initiatives in more than 50 countries. Philip created a new global trade union for a new century, by bringing together four global union organisations: FIET (International Federation of Employees, Technicians and Managers), MEI (Media and Entertainment International), IGF (International Graphical Federation) and CI (Communications International.) In doing so, Philip brought about the single largest change in global union structures in the post-war era. He was responsible for the overarching business and financial strategy of an organisation that now has regional hubs across the world and is recognized globally as a pioneer and innovator in the labour movement, built on sound governance. The model created by Philip has left a legacy of success, including a reputation for excellence in conference organising with the UNI world congresses attracting more than 2000 participants and leading speakers from labour, politics and human rights.

Christy Hoffman has been UNI’s Deputy General Secretary since 2010. Christy has been active in trade union work for almost 40 years, beginning with her role as the Chief Steward on the floor of a large jet engine factory. As Deputy General Secretary, she has been the backbone of UNI’s Breaking Through agenda, working together with SCORE, the sectors and Regions, to ensure that UNI is engaged in successful campaigns with bold strategies, and taking the lead in negotiations with global companies to advance and protect the rights of their employees. Her work is rooted in the belief that collective bargaining and worker empowerment are answers to an economic model that is failing working people. In 2013, she stepped forward to negotiate the Accord for Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and has since been a central player in the agreement’s implementation and enforcement. The Accord is widely recognized as an historic turning point in supply chain accountability, a remarkable achievement which is testament to the power of working together with global companies in a binding framework to make change. In the course of her efforts to enforce the Accord, she negotiated settlements with global brands totaling almost $3 million, a first for a global union. With IndustriALL, she negotiated the 2018 Accord, which will remain in effect until 2021. Christy has deep experience with the international instruments which secure the human rights of workers, and is an influential advocate across the “business and human rights” landscape and a frequent speaker on the topic. Before becoming Deputy General Secretary, she served as the Organising Director of the UNI Property Services Global Union from 2004 to 2008. Under her leadership, the sector achieved breakthrough global agreements with leading multinationals and ran innovative campaigns to improve standards for security guards and cleaners. Christy has wide union experience, ranging from workplace to national and International leadership positions. Beginning her career as a rank and file activist and local leader with the Machinists Union, she later became an organiser and then labor attorney for some of the leading private sector unions in the US- the Mineworkers, Teamsters and finally as Associate General Counsel and Global Organising Director of SEIU. She has extensive experience as a litigator, negotiator and campaign strategist, playing a key role in some of the well known US labor disputes such as the national strike against UPS in 1997. Hoffman got an early start when it comes to using international solidarity to win social justice and respect for human rights. She founded and chaired the Connecticut Anti-Apartheid Committee in the 1980s, which won the first state-wide legislation in the United States requiring divestment by the state from companies doing business in South Africa.
